A platform for testing, learning, and challenging cognitive biases.
Introduction
I teamed up with two professors of psychology at Uppsala university. My task was to research, design and test a new web & app based product. The platform would ustilise a widely accepted method of testing, the affect misattribution procedure (AMP).
During the discovery phase, we talked in depth about the shortcomings of implicit association testing, and the identified what we considered to be major problems with the implicit association test (IAT). I converted these insights into a code of ethics on which our platform would be based.
Collaborators
The testing methodology, timing, visual assets and article content was developed under the watchful eyes of Nazar Akrami & Robin Bergh. Both associate professors of psychology at Uppsala university.
The vibe
I wanted to establish a timeless aesthetic. Blending the retro-futuristic style of VHS artwork and strict use of Swiss style poster grids.
Illustrations
I created a wide variety of illustrations. One for each cognitive biases covered in the articles, and for general branding.
AMP
The affect misattribution procedure (AMP) test shows the participants several images in very quick succession. A focus point, a priming image, a mask and finally a target image.
After the participant has completed ~50 tasks, a bias may be detected. After completing the test, the results are shown and most importantly, further reading is offered.

User testing
Using a low fidelity, but highly functional prototype, we tested the platform with 10 participants. We looked specifically for people with a growth mindset and had expressed interest in self improvement. Through this testing, we learned that we had to emphasise:
Users feel safe, and anonymous
Heavy involvement of the professors
Focus on education over judgement
Conclusion
The data from user testing were converted to insights and used to iterate the products. The professors were hugely impressed with the work having far exceeded their expectations
The project came to satisfying conclusion. When last we spoke, they were looking for someone to take on the development of the platform.
